Certified vs. non-certified mini wood stoves
Start with the requirements for your installation. Then choose the Cub or Grizzly size that suits your space.
What “certified” means here
The certified models have safety certification for Canada and the U.S. This is separate from environmental certification and mobile-home certification. Our stoves do not have the environmental certification required for residential installations and are intended for recreational applications.
Before ordering, confirm your proposed installation with your insurer, a qualified installer and the relevant local authority. A certified stove alone does not mean that every installation is approved.
Which models are which?
Safety-certified models
Cub: CB-1008
Grizzly: CB-1210
Choose these when safety certification is required for your proposed installation, subject to the manual and the applicable requirements.
Non-certified models
Cub: CB-1000
Grizzly: CB-2000
These do not carry the safety certification of the CB-1008 and CB-1210 models. Confirm whether a non-certified stove is permitted for your application before choosing one.
Insurance requirements can differ between recreational and residential installations. Being uninsured does not remove installation requirements.
Does certification change the heat output?
No. The certified and non-certified versions of the same stove size have the same heat output. Certification changes certain physical features and the installation requirements.
- Shield underneath: the certified version includes an under-stove shield for installation with a single hearth pad, as specified in its manual.
- Flue connection: two holes in the collar allow a mechanical connection between the stove and the pipe.
- Handles: the air-intake handles are repositioned and the door handle is lengthened to meet the standard’s temperature requirements.
The flue systems are different
Non-certified installation
- The 3″ pipe runs from the stove to 12″ above the roof’s highest point or peak.
- The 5″ insulated pipe surrounds the 3″ pipe at the ceiling and roof passage. It begins 2″ below the interior ceiling.
- The 5″ pipe ends 10.5″ above the roof’s highest point or peak—1.5″ below the top of the 3″ pipe.
Our roof exit kits provide the components for this roof and ceiling passage. The 3″ pipe is purchased separately.
Maintain at least 40″ from the stove top to the ceiling or a surface above. The lower end of the 5″ pipe must also remain at least 30″ from the stove top.
Certified installation
- The 3″ pipe connects to a certified 6″ chimney system using our 3″–6″ cone adaptor.
- The transition and chimney installation must follow the stove manual and the chimney manufacturer’s instructions.
- The certified 6″ system continues through the ceiling and roof.
We supply the 3″ pipe and cone adaptor. The certified 6″ chimney components are purchased separately.
Our 5″ roof exit kits are not used for certified installations.
These are different installation systems. Do not combine their clearance rules or use the non-certified setup as a substitute for the certified installation instructions.
Why mounting position matters
For a certified installation, plan the stove position around the pipe-to-combustible clearance in the manual. Measure from the outside surface of the pipe, not its centreline. The wall mount itself is not the measurement point.
A wall mount may need to stand away from the wall so the 3″ pipe meets its clearance requirement and aligns with the certified chimney. Have a qualified installer determine the mounting arrangement; a shield does not automatically reduce certified clearances.
Before you order
- Confirm the application: check the local requirements and the stove manual for your proposed recreational installation.
- Speak with your insurer: ask which certification, installation method and documentation they require.
- Plan the whole flue system: have a qualified installer check the chimney, mounting position and clearances. In Canada, a WETT-certified professional can help assess the installation.
- Choose the model: select certified or non-certified first, then Cub or Grizzly based on your heating needs.
